During WWII the vast majority of military sales went to Indian. This left Indian dealers with little or nothing to sell. Harley-Davidson received far less govt. contracts for motorcycles, but this was a blessing in disguise. As a result, Harley-Davidson acquired many Indian dealerships because the dealers needed something to sell, as did Harley. After the end of the war this put Harley-Davidson in a much better position to capitalize on the returning G.I.'s desire for bikes.
