Custom Buell Parts
Buell may be out of business but we intent to ride our 2010 1125R project bike until are hearts are content. We love the broad power delivery of the championship-winning Helicon V-twin as well as the whisper-jet quietness and smoothness of the belt drive. In a world were sportbikes have become so solo-rider oriented, my wife and I relish the two-up ride-ability of the Buell 1125R and comfort thanks to the reasonable seating and hole-punching wind protection.
To add to the Buell's two-up comfort and style we searched for drop pegs to give our valued knees more legroom. We found Knight Design, a small shop specializing in custom aftermarket billet aluminum parts for Buell (as well for Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Triumph). Located in Corvallis, Oregon, we found their service to be friendly, responsive and precise.
The foot pegs we selected are machined from solid 6061-T6 aluminum and are available in both a Knight Design's Crosstrax or Sidetrax pattern. They offer pegs with a 2" drop, 1" drop, and straight pegs with no drop. We decided on the Sidetrax 1" drop for both rider and passenger.
We also selected the slick-looking reservoir covers with choice of engraving on top. Custom engraving is available but we selected the "1125R" as one of the standard designs. In the past, we found similar covers to be more durable over time to corrosive brake fluids. For Buell motorcycles, it is a simple deal as the reservoir covers are a one-size fits most all models.
Knight Design does all there our own design, machining and coating in-house. The end-result was well-crafted parts that were made with precision. Stock mounting hardware easily secured the new parts in place. The only tip I have is to understand how the spring systems work before you remove the originals. All parts were installed within 30-minutes and fit perfectly with no adjustments required.
On the road, the new part added to the quality look and styling of the Buell. The red anodizing we selected matched the red accents of our particular 1125R. As well, the new rider and passenger foot pegs now match as opposed the stock pegs, which differ between the front and rear.
While riding the Buell, the extra legroom was noticeable and welcomed for both. As a matter of preference, I later adjusted the shift and brake levers to better match the new lowered peg height. In the end, the pegs feel more solid than stock while reservoir covers dress-up the cockpit for a night out on the town. For more information: www.knightdesignllc.com
