Motorcycle Bluetooth 2.0
BMW Motorrad has expanded the application spectrum of its Bluetooth communication system and now offers it with its BMW Motorcycle Sport helmet.
The Sport helmet is already designed for immediate integration of the BMW Motorrad Communication System. With its excellent aerodynamics and exceptional aeroacoustics, it is perfectly suited to the new communications system and its outstanding sound quality.
The system employs Bluetooth standard 2.0 to allow wireless voice communication between two helmets as well as other Bluetooth equipment, such as navigation systems, mobile telephones, or MP3 players.
The BMW Motorrad Communication System comprises a main circuit board, a boom microphone, and two loudspeakers which are installed in the helmet, plus two NiMH rechargeable batteries, which enable constant operation for periods of ten to twelve hours.
The system is controlled by a three-button module, which fits snugly into any Sport helmet, irrespective of the shell's dimensions.
The BMW Bluetooth System has been conceived to facilitate voice communication between the rider and co-rider, but communication with other Bluetooth equipment is also possible. For instance, the rider can not only talk to his co-rider, but is also able to receive messages emitted by the BMW Motorcycle Navigator IV, make telephone calls, or listen to music, provided the equipment used is Bluetooth-compatible.
The Motorcycle Communication System also allows communication from motorcycle to motorcycle. Depending on the local conditions, the system will allow voice communication over a distance of up to 100 metres with only a slight drop in quality, provided there is an uninterrupted line of sight between the Bluetooth devices.
If the distance cannot be bridged or the conditions are otherwise unfavourable, and the connection is lost, it is automatically restored as soon as the distance between the Bluetooth transmitters is sufficiently small.
The Motorcycle Communication System in the Sport Helmet is compatible with the communication system in the BMW Motorrad System 6 Helmet.
Comments
I wouldn't sweat the DOT as it's obviously a Schuberth and quality. I've been wearing an S1 and had a C2 and wore it out. I've seen the 6 at a dealer in Ottawa and it appears to be beyond excellent, however that being said, the price is $1000! Ok, $999. Plus that Can. HST of something like 13% in Ontario, which if you go through the hoops you can have mailed back. Still, $1k is a tad toooo much unless it comes with a blender or something.
Not if you are living in the US. They require you to sign documents and ask for photo id. Their helmet is not DOT approved.
As an aside, you can buy the BMW system 6 helmets in Canada at the BMW dealership.
Yeah, great for riders everywhere...except the US. BMW wants our money for their bikes, just not their helmets. I've never really understood why. Many other European makers bring their helmet here. I bought a System 2 back in the late 80s and loved it. Best helmet I ever had. Would love to have a System 6, but can't because I live in the US.
