Bonneville Speed Week
The Bonneville Salt Flats are legendary for speed. This year at the salt, the highly competitive Production 1000cc class was the one to watch.
All of the major brands were represented. The one that came out on top was none other than the Honda CBR1000 RR. First, Leslie Porterfield piloted the Sir Speedy Honda to an impressive 197mph SCTA record during Speedweek.
She was just getting started with this powerful liter bike. At the FIM and AMA sanctioned BUB Speed Trials, she knocked the record out of the park. With a two way average of over 200 mph, the CBR1000RR now holds the title as the world's fastest production 1000cc motorcycle.
Leslie's production motorcycle now holds the AMA national and FIM world records at 200.137 mph pending the ratification process of the FIM. Speeds once only achieved by 1300cc bikes are now coming from a smaller package.
We at High Five Cycles asked Leslie how she was able to blow away the competition. She smiled and said "This bike is unbelievable. The excellent suspension from the factory helped me get traction on the salt. It also has an abundance of power!"
That last statement is obvious from the results! When we asked he what's next for her liter bike, she stated "well, I guess I'll go home and put the license plate back on and go for a ride! I really can't wait for next year. I know I can go faster on this bike!"
That says it all. That is how you get hooked on Land Speed racing at Bonneville. Always the quest for a faster record. Over the past few years, she has taken home several records in different classes, including the top record for a female motorcyclist, which got her an entry into the Guinness Book of world records as the Fastest Woman in the World on a Motorcycle.
On the other end of the spectrum, this year Leslie set the World's SLOWEST record on two wheels on a Honda Ruckus 50cc. She is now the slowest person in the world on a motorcycle. This will most likely get her another Guinness Book entry. It's a lighthearted flip side of her other big records.
Leslie Porterfield owes gratitude to her sponsors for her success. These sponsors include Sir Speedy Printing and Marketing, Foremost Insurance, Bazzaz, American Honda, FLY Racing, UClear communication devices, PMP sprockets, PMR, Airtech, and the Dallas dealership she owns, High Five Cycles.
