DR650SE Preview

When the road ends, some riders like to keep on charging ahead. It's just these riders that Suzuki has always catered to with the DR650SE line of dual sport motorcycles, and the lightweight single-cylinder returns for 2011.

The 2011 Suzuki DR650SE combines off-road agility with smooth street performance, giving motorcyclists the freedom to ride where they want. The DR 650 SE engine has a counterbalancer for smooth operation on the streets, and much torque when that street disappears and the off-road fun begins.

Engine Features:

  • The DR650SE is equipped with a compact, 644cc, SOHC, four-stroke, air-cooled, single counterbalanced engine equipped with Suzuki Advanced Cooling System (SACS). Additional piston-jet cooling and engine oil cooler are also standard features. The engine is tuned with an emphasis on powerful performance at low-to-mid rpm range.
  • Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) coated aluminum cylinder is used for durability, weight reduction and superior heat transfer.
  • The DR650SE is equipped with a convenient electric starter (combined with a mechanical automatic decompression system for easy and quick starts). The system is powered by a lightweight and compact low-maintenance battery.
  • A Mikuni 40mm "Slingshot" carburetor enhances throttle response and overall engine performance.
  • A painted stainless-steel exhaust system is light and corrosion-resistant, and tuned specifically for strong low and midrange power.

Chassis Features:

  • The DR650SE uses a lightweight, compact, rigid semi-double cradle frame that is built to provide excellent on/off road riding. Use of thin-wall/large-diameter tubing reduces weight while increasing frame rigidity.
  • Front fork combines the best features of conventional and inverted designs: smooth and progressive action. Large diameter, thin-walled tubes reduce unsprung weight while maintaining high rigidity (with minimal below-axle extension).
  • A link-type rear suspension with piggyback-style shock absorber and adjustable compression damping provides stable damping performance.
  • Front and rear suspensions both provide long 260mm (10.2-inch) wheel travel for superb maneuverability.
  • Lightweight 290mm (11.4-inch) front floating-disc brake with two-piston caliper and 240mm (9.4-inch) rear disc brake with two-piston caliper together provide reliable stopping power.
  • Hollow type wheel axles and an aluminum swingarm offers less unsprung weight.
  • The DR650SE's short wheelbase and low seat height provide nimble dualsport performance. The seat height can be lowered 40mm (1.6 in) with suspension modifications performed by a dealer.
  • The DR650SE comes with a full on-road lighting system with bright 60/55 watt halogen headlight; handlebar-mounted brushguards; special design tires with on/off road tread pattern fitted to 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel; and frame-mounted luggage rack for additional carrying capacity.

Transmission Features:

  • The DR650SE comes with a wide-ratio 5-speed transmission with O-ring sealed final drive chain.

Bought a new one in 2005. I now have 18,000 miles on it with two very minor problems. The wires to the dimmer switch came off the solder leaving me without a headlight. Also, the cam chain tensioner gasket started leaking oil a little, very minor easy fix. The only annoying thing is the grinding of gears getting into 1st gear with the engine running, it has always done this since new and no amount of adjustment remedies this. Otherwise it is a great bike, plenty of power, nothing slows it down.

Just picked up my brand new DR650 today! I clocked close to 150 miles on her today. Nice for the street, awesome blasting backroads and dirt roads or open single track. This is not a woods bike by any means, gearing/tuning is way to high but otherwise it fits the bill. Plenty of power, very smooth both on and off road. If you want both a road bike and a dirt bike but can't afford both this bike will make most happy. If you plan on strict woods riding this bike will not make you happy. Also, the DRZ 400 is almost the same bike, except for cooling/less weight etc. The 400 is also geared to high for tight woods riding!

not wanting to abuse my road BMW (F800R) I was persuaded by a friend to try the good DoctoR 650. I found a 2008 model with less than 500 miles on the clock, immaculate with options for 2/3 the price of a new bike.
My first impression was how powerful a mere 43 horses can feel. I'd already dropped down to 87 with the baby Beemer but doubted the Suzuki's power would satisfy me. How wrong was I?....strong linear power application.
First tank of fuel saw me get 263 kms from 12 litres, the suspension is plush, just a few sensible mods to do and a trip to the Flinders Ranges beckoning. Unbeatable value for what is essentially an unbreakable bike.

500 miles on it now. its an urban street fighter in every sense.the suspension will absorb anything. the plush ride is welcome. my previous bike was a 2006 sv650. the torque is perfect for getting in to traffic. and the controls are smooth. the transmission is still a little stiff. the engine is progressive in delivery. the big bore always reminds you how much torque is available. throttle response is almost instant. i applaud the engineering behind this carb. however i do miss the fuel injection when it comes to cold starts. although it takes less than a minute to get off the choke. its a great machine all around. the best part? the MPG. i got 53.2mpg on the last tank. i'm not "easy" on her either. its broke in.
