2011 Infineon AMA Pro Racing Preview

AMA West Coast Moto Jam

The AMA roadracing championship picks up again this weekend (May 14-15) in Sonoma, Calif. Billed as the West Coast Moto Jam, the AMA Pro Racing riders have had a chance to regroup following Daytona and really get settled into the season ahead.

Infineon is a track that seems to be enjoyed by all the riders, for layout as well as environment – wine country, plenty of nice restaurants.

In the AMA Superbike class, Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young is in the points lead coming out of Daytona and into round 2 at Infineon with two impressive race wins, granting him a total of 60 points.

Young is looking exceptionally strong having returned to racing following a back injury incurred last season. Defending 2010 Superbike Champion, Josh Hayes, riding the Monster Energy Graves Yamaha, sits in second with 49 points.

Three points back in third place is Tommy Hayden on the second Rockstar Makita Suzuki. A little further back in fourth, with 33 points, is Ben Bostrom on the Jordan Suzuki.

Look for Tommy’s brother, Roger Lee Hayden, riding the National Guard Jordan Suzuki, to figure prominently in the front runners throughout the season, as well as 2010 AMA Pro Daytona Sportbike Champion, Martin Cardenas aboard the M4 Suzuki who has made an impressive switch to the 1000cc bikes, going 6-4 at Daytona.

It’s good to see BMW with a strong presence on track, represented by Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing’s Larry Pegram and BMW of San Diego’s Jeremy Toye. Unfortunately, fan favorite Eric Bostrom, through an official letter announced his retirement and the end of the Cycle World/Attack Performance Kawasaki SuperBike effort following Daytona.

The 2011 AMA Pro Racing season represents the National Guard’s third year of title sponsorship of the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike series. Unlike previous years where a certain team pretty much had first and second place sewn up, the racing is absolutely wide-open, with a large number of riders and teams being in a position to score wins and be in contention for the title.

In the hotly contested Daytona Sportbike class, Latus Ducati’s Jason DiSalvo comes to Infineon with a prestigious (albeit by some views, controversial) Daytona win under his belt and a solid 30-point lead over Corey West, with 25. “Smiling” Jake Zemke sits in third with 23 points, and trailing the lead group is JD Beach, in fourth, with 18 points.

West Coast Moto Jam at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma will feature double-header action for Superbike, Supersport, Daytona Sportbike, as well as the popular Vance & Hines XR1200 Series.
