Derbi, the European motorcycle manufacturer with a history steeped in racing, pays homage to its "Red Bullets," their stable of small displacement racing motorcycles, which have won an incredible 10 World Championships in the 50cc, 80cc and 125 cc categories with their all-new Mulhacen Cafe 659 Angel Nieto.
To celebrate the immense contribution racer Angel Nieto made in putting Derbi in the winner’s circle they have dedicated the new Euro 3 version of the Mulhacen Cafe 659 to the former World Champion.
Nieto earned thirteen world motorcycle racing titles in his storied career. Due to a deep superstition however the Spaniard refers to his championship tally as "12+1 World Titles."
The Derbi Mulhacen Cafe 659 is based on the popular scrambler version and was created to appease customers demanding a pure street version. The answer was a motorcycle that epitomizes the sleek styling inherent in the Derbi brand, with distinct lines and a fire red paint scheme.
The front fender, bikini fairing, tank and rear section carry a dynamic black racing stripe down the center in true 70s retro style. Gold anodized fork tubes and handlebars are set off against the black frame and black 17-inch alloy spoke wheels.
The heart that beats at the core of the Mulhacen Cafe is the 659cc, liquid-cooled, electronically fuel-injected Yamaha-Minarelli single cylinder motor (Euro 3 compliant).
A Brembo radial caliper grabs a single 320mm disc on the front while a 245mm disc handles stopping shores on the rear. Frame is tubular steel with a reinforced aluminum swingarm that has a unique side-mounted single shock in a progressive linkage set-up.
A dynamic, backlit digital instrument panel is tucked into behind the bikini fairing and the radiator cowlings are emblazoned with a large number 1.
The motocross style handlebars compliment the upright seating position rendering a comfortable set of ergonomics on this new incarnation of the scrambler. The all-new 2011 Derbi Mulhacen Cafe 659 Angel Nieto will be available in Europe as a limited edition.
