SX Race Report
It's as close as Trey Canard gets to a home Monster Energy Supercross motorcycle race and it couldn't have come at a better time.
Canard of the GEICO Powersports Honda team is normally an AMA Supercross Lites West rider. Lately he's been filling in for injured Andrew Short in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series, collecting three straight podium finishes at the top level of the motorcycle racing sport.
However, the 20-year-old says he's been trying to adjust to the extra travel his new duties require and the relatively quick trip from his home base in Shawnee, Okla., to Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will be welcome.
Trey Canard Speaks...
"It's the closest race to home for sure," Canard said. "It's nice that I don't have to hop in a plane and do that whole gig. There's going to be a lot of people from Oklahoma and my hometown there. It'll be cool."
"Dallas Supercross has been around a while with races in the old Texas Stadium. It's going to be interesting to check out the new place. It's going to be an interesting time and good to be back in the central United States."
Canard has fared well helping out the Honda Red Bull Racing team, but ever the competitor, he wishes he could have been able to hang with the leaders a little better during his runs.
"In our sport you can never really feel content," Canard said. "It's been a good ride so far. I can't complain about finishing in third place, but it's still kind of a bummer getting beat by 20-plus seconds. But he experience I've gained and just staying racing in general has just been awesome."
Canard's teammate, Kevin Windham, has come close to a podium finish in each of the last two races himself.
In Toronto he worked through the pack late to finish in fifth a week after doing much the same thing to finish fourth in Daytona. Windham sits fifth in the season points standings.
Canard has worked his way into the top 15 in points despite racing just four times in Supercross' top level. He said the extra time on the bike will be important when he graduates to the 450cc bikes next year full time.
"It's awesome experience," Canard said. "You can practice all you want, but nothing is as good for you as race experience.
"Never in my life have I raced 10 straight weekends. That's been the toughest adjustment; it just really wears on you. But now I'll know what to expect.
The Monster Energy AMA Supercross stop in Dallas is March 20 at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
