During the Misano round, World Superbike's Max Biaggi, proved to yet another generation of motorcycle racing fans why his is known as the Roman Emperor, winning his fourth set of double-races for a total of eight spectacular wins on the 2010 World SBK race season.
In race one, the four-time world champion and current WSBK points leader took command over Carlos Checa (Ducati 1198R) and Troy Corser (BMW S1000RR) at the end of an extremely close race.
After trailing Corser, who jumped to the lead at the start, Biaggi unleashed the decisive attack seven laps from the end to stay in the lead, denying all final attacks from Checa, who had moved into second place.
With this victory, the third consecutive Superbike win following the dominating double win in the USA race, Biaggi strengthened his hold on first place in the world rankings earning seventeen points over his immediate pursuer, Leon Haslam on Suzuki, who came in eighth.
Max Biaggi says: "I'm obviously happy with this victory. Especially because I didn't expect it and because doing so well in Italy, in front of our supporters has a very special flavor for us. The conditions are difficult because of the lack of grip. Already after five or six laps I started to "drift". After overtaking Troy I tried to push as hard as possible because I saw that the times were still high, but I couldn't shake him or Checa because the risk for mistakes was too high."
In World SBK race two, a brawl broke out at the beginning of the race, and Biaggi found himself in fourth place trailing Corser, Checa (Ducati 1098R) and Fabrizio (Ducati). On the fifth lap he began an unstoppable progression of spectacular that brought him to the lead in the ninth lap.
From then on Biaggi masterfully handled his Aprilia RSV4, increasing the gap more and more until finally, two laps from the end, he was almost eight seconds ahead of the second place rider who at that point was Leon Haslam. Max ended the race easily in control with more than four seconds of gap.
Max Biaggi says: "In race 2, to be honest, maybe I rode... pushing the envelope a bit, maybe even risking too much. But on the other hand, without risk there is no gain! This race represents a crucial moment for us and for our season we are coming out with our heads held high."
Max has widened the WSBK Championship rankings-gap over second place Leon Haslam, on the Suzuki, to 37 points (307 vs 270). This is an increase to the 15-point gap prior to the triumphant Romagna weekend.
With this result Aprilia also strengthens its hold on the World Superbike manufacturer first place ranking and has a 313-point advantage over the closest pursuers: Suzuki (283) and Ducati (250).
